Catullus 87

Catullus is direct in his message in poem 87. He says basically "I love Lesbia. No one else can say that they've experienced a love equivalent to this." Here, Catullus is very macho. I picture this poem as a cover of a cheesy romance novel: Lesbia, entangled in Catullus' brawy arms, has a twinkle in her eye as he leans in to kiss her.

The feeling of love and passion is so intense in this poem, it almost makes me uncomfortable - like the way I feel when I see a man cry. It is taboo, in our world for a man to be so openly emotional, even about love. Nevertheless, it shows how much Catullus (the character) truly, deeply loves his Lesbia.
